Catching The Wave

When my husband and I moved back to Maine four years ago ... everybody understood why except our friends here. Mainers usually cautioned us on three fronts:

"You won't make nearly as much money as you could in other parts of the country."
"Don't you remember how LONG winter is here?"
"Its so boring here."

I agree the first two concerns are quite real. The third I wholeheartedly disagree with. I think Mainers secretly find life invigorating here ... but they say its boring and backward so a bunch of people from away don't move in and ruin it all. I know that's how I feel now that I'm here!

The more people we interview on 207, the more I find my husband and I are just two of the many people who've caught the wave to Maine. Our musical guest tonight is a great case in point.

Everything about Taylor Mesple (pronounced mess-PLAY ... how Maine is that!) screams Maine: he's a man of few, carefully chosen words; he has three jobs; he dresses like he doesn't own a suit.

So I almost fell over when he told us he's from Boulder, Colorado. This is gonna sound like a broken record ... but ... he and his wife were driving through New England a few years ago ... and yes, you all know where I'm going with this ... and boom! they decided to pull up their Western roots and move to Maine. They live on two acres near Lewiston-Auburn with their two children and while they're not rakin' in the dough, they are content and oh so happy. Now, in addition to producing his own music and producing and mixing other artist's music, Taylor and his wife are opening a music theater in Lewiston next week called the Maple Room. They've been here long enough to know that Mainers support Mainers in their ventures, and so they are optimistic it will be a success.

I've heard versions of this story so many times during our 207 travels in the last four years that its got to be more than coincidence. I think there's some sort of magnetism that Maine exudes that draws adventurous, creative people here. And many, like my sons, are lucky enough to be born here and hopefully therefore born with it.

Whatever it is, I'm glad I caught the wave. Now I'll stop writing about it so word doesn't spread to too many others.
